This is a crucial year for Afghanistan – there has been the International Afghanistan Conference in London in January and the Peace Jirga in June, while the Parliamentary Elections and a NATO review is due later this year. Another key moment in this critical year for Afghanistan is the Kabul conference. Foreign ministers will join national leaders on 20 July to assess the progress made by Afghan forces in improving security in many of the war-torn areas by late 2010, allowing for the reduction of foreign troops. BBC World Service will be closely monitoring the unfolding events and the national leaders' attempts to restore ownership from the international community. BBC's Lyse Doucet reports from Kabul.
By 2030, experts warn that asbestos could be the cause of millions of deaths - despite an international outcry, it continues to be used across much of the world. The industry says it now uses a less hazardous form of the mineral called 'white asbestos' or chrysotile, which can be safely controlled. But many scientists insist all forms of asbestos may cause cancer and continuing exports could seriously prolong the problem. A joint investigation by the BBC and International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) explores a global network of industry groups that have spent millions of dollars since the mid-1980s to keep asbestos in international business. The asbestos season will be broadcast across BBC radio, television, online and mobile, including BBC World Service.
